"Book Jackets"
Reading Activity
Materials:  pencil, plane paper, crayons, reading story or stories

After reading a stories all week, I will get out 'book jackets' and let the kids pick their favorite story we read for the week and they decorate the jacket and write a sentence to tell about it.

Fold the paper end/end to meet in the middle.  Fold down top corners to look like a collar and I usually draw buttons down the center.  After they decorate the outside to look like their 'jackets', they open it up and illustrate and write about the story.

Lesson Title: Number Review (0-5)                                                Grade/Level: K

A Blue Print for Learning: A Teacher’s Guide to the Tennessee Curriculum:

Match quantities up to twenty with numerals.  (K.1.1.d)

Sort and classify objects by size, number, color, shape and kind.  (K.2.1.a)

Recognize and name circles, square, triangles, and rectangles.  (K.3.1.a)

Goals:  The students will be able to correctly identify the numbers 0-5.  Students will also understand that each number word represents a number value.  The concepts of sorting objects and naming shapes will also be used in this lesson.

Objectives:

  1. The learner will be able to match quantities with numbers 0-5.
  2. TLW create a number poster by sorting shapes and classifying them by the correct number on the poster.
  3. TLW identify their shape when they place it on the number poster.  (Review)

Set:  The teacher will read a story about numbers in the book A Tree for Me by Nancy Van Laan in the Read Along Anthology.  The students will listen and count the pictures in the book as the teacher reads.  The students may finish some repetitive sentences in the book orally.

Instructional Procedures:

  1. Begin the math lesson by reviewing with the children numbers 0-5.  Ask the students to show each number using their fingers.
  2. Remind the students that we have been learning about numbers and dinosaurs.  Show the students a bag and explain that it has dinosaur bones in it and they are special because they have numbers on them.  Explain that each of them are going to choose a dinosaur bone out of the bag and look at it and show it to the other students and say the number that is on the bone.  When they finish they will put their bone back in the bag.
  3. Individually, let each student select a bone and tell the number that is on the bone.  If they are correct they place it back in the bag.  If they are incorrect they are allowed to ask a special helper of their choice to help them out.
  4. When all of the students have had a turn explain that now one bone is going to be taken away and they cannot see the number on that bone.  Take the remaining bones out of the bag and explain that they have to be detectives and find the missing number.  (This requires the students to use their Higher Order Thinking skills.)
  5. Explain to the students that the class is going to make a number poster.  Show the students the empty poster with the number and number words 0-5.  Tell the students that they are going to cut out shapes to finish the number poster.  Explain that each number needs to have that number of shapes.
  6. Give each student one shape to cut out.  Then allow the students to tape the correct number of shapes for each number on the poster.  There will be more shapes than needed so have students to decide if they need to add their shape to the number poster.
  7. When the children are finished placing their shapes on the poster have them look at the poster and explain that we are going to check to see if the poster is correct.  Look at the numbers while naming and counting the shapes for each number.

Questions for Higher Order Thinking:

  1. How can numbers help us?
  2. Where do we see numbers in real life?
  3. Which number is still in the bag? (This question will be asked during Instructional procedure 4.)

Closure:

The teacher will ask Higher Order Thinking Questions in a class discussion style.  The teacher will then review the numbers 0-5.

Adaptation to Meet Individual Needs of Diverse Learning:

I will use signals to keep the students that have trouble paying attention on task.  I will also involve the class in discussions and a variety of activities to prevent loss of attention.  Thoughtful Classroom strategies will be used during this lesson including part of a task rotation (Understanding: making distinctions of where pictures should be on number poster and Mastery:  number identification and recognition skills) as well as the Deep-Processing phase of Cracking Vocabulary’s Code (students identifying examples of number words on bones and pictures while representing those number words with pictures).  I am also using several of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences during this lesson including linguistic, logical-mathematical, and spatial intelligences.

Evaluation/Assessment:

During the lesson I will assess the students by using informal observations. I will use a checklist to record my observations.  I will record if the student was able to correctly name the number on the bone and name and place their shape correctly on the number poster.  I will also record if the student was able to answer any higher order thinking questions.  This will also be recorded on the checklist.  (See attached)  I will also make anecdotal records to note different students’ progress.
