I love children. Or more specifically, I love teaching children. That is the first thing I want you to know about me. I have been teaching for 20 years.
I come from a family of teachers. My maternal grandmother, mother, aunt, and uncle were all teachers. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but after having my aunt, Carolyn Quarles, I knew what kind of teacher I wanted to be. She made learning fun. Her excitement and energy was engaging. That year paved the way for my future plans.
I started at Manley Elementary teaching kindergarten in 1980. I taught and coached there for two years before moving to West Elementary to teach fourth grade for two more years. I learned that all children want to be loved and respected-- no matter how old they are.
God has led our family many places. In Texas, while my husband attended seminary, we started our family. God richly blessed us with our first daughter, Courtney, in 1984. While serving in Nashville, God expanded our family again with the gift of our second daughter Brittany. I returned to the classroom in an inner-city school teaching second grade when Brittany started school. I stayed there four years until our family decided to move back to Morristown to spend time with my mother, Bettye Overholt, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimers.
John Clawson offered me a job teaching second grade at my alma mater, Hillcrest Elementary. I have been there ever since.
