Education of Homeless Children and Youth
The Stewart B. McKinney Education of Homeless Children and Youth provides guidelines for helping school districts provide comprehensive services for students and families in transition.
Hamblen County applied for and received a Stewart B. McKinney Education of Homeless Children and Youth grant for the first time during the 2004-2005 school year. Our district applies each year for these funds to help some of our most needy families, who are in transition. The purpose of this grant is to facilitate the enrollment, attendance, and success for homeless children and youth in public schools, including preschools. Services provided by Hamblen County through this grant include:
*A Homeless Liaison, responsible for identifying homeless students and families and
linking them to available services
*Tutors/Teaching Assistants to work with homeless students in schools
*Collaboration with MATS, CEASE and other local shelters, as well as The Daily Bread
Community Kitchen and other community agencies to provide extended
services.
*Transportation to and from the child's school of origin or home school
*School supplies for homeless students
(Juan Cervantes, federal assistant, helps secure school supplies and prepare backpacks for students in transition.)
