Essential Strategies

Message from Dr Brenda Dean, Assistant Director of Schools

Over the last several years, much time and commitment of resources have been devoted to providing instructional strategies for our teachers.  The training has also provided a common vocabulary for teachers and principals in the improvement of teaching, with the goal of increased student achievement.

Attached to this web page you will find our district’s Essential Strategies Handbook, which was presented to the Hamblen County Board of Education at its September meeting.  The handbook provides a concise summary of strategies that are research-based and ones that have stood the test of time.  The strategies encompass the work of Strong and Silver in Thoughtful Classroom, Marzano, Wiggins and McTighe, and many other leaders in the field of education.

The handbook dedicates one page to each strategy, including a brief description, a research base, an example utilizing the strategy, and additional Internet resources. The document will also be posted to our district web page under the teacher tab, where additional strategies will be added from time to time.

Our instructional coaches have worked diligently to provide a quality product for you, and I sincerely appreciate their effort and work product.  If you have additional questions about the handbook, please contact your instructional coach or me.  Similarly, if you have ideas for effective, research-based strategies that should also be included in the handbook, please forward them to me.  I thank you for all that you do for the students of Hamblen County.
